On Monday, October 22, 2012, I had the amazing opportunity to hold a Debbie’s Club workshop at my Alma mater, Catholic Central School in Springfield, OH. It meant so much to me to return to my hometown and walk the halls of the school that I once attended. Everyone was so welcoming, and I was thrilled to meet the junior high girls to discuss discovering their true beauty.
The 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls filed into the gymnasium and I shared my story with them in a large group. We then all split up into groups of ten to begin activities. The girls demonstrated the difference between a good and bad first impression. They talked about their values and what they look for in a friend. They wrote down what their interests were and then discussed them among their tables. One table had two sisters sitting next to each other and the one sister found out the other wanted to be a teacher. She had no idea! I thought this was such a special moment, because sometimes we might not openly communicate to those we are around the most. This was a great example of how communicating and listening will allow you to really get to know a person.
After sharing our interests and really getting to know each other, the girls made inspiration boards! An inspiration board is a place where they can put anything they want. They can put things that interest them, things that inspire them and things they think are stylish! The boards turned out great, and I know all of the girls were excited to go hang them in their lockers after the workshop!
After a great day with the junior high girls,
I had the opportunity to meet with their female role models. Their mothers and grandmothers joined me in the cafeteria as we discussed what came out of the workshop and shared our stories. They were all so thankful that their daughters or granddaughters were able to attend and learn how to be comfortable in their own skin. Junior high can often be a time when girls are uncertain and lack self-confidence. They needed the reminder that we are all unique, and we need to celebrate our true beauty!
I can’t thank Catholic Central School enough for allowing me to return home. I had a wonderful time meeting all of the girls and cannot wait to return again. Thanks to all of you. You inspire me!
